From SharePoint to a Moodle that runs onboarding, security and certifications

Zühlke is a European engineering and innovation consultancy. Before working with us, their internal learning — onboarding, security announcements, internal courses, certifications — lived inside Microsoft SharePoint alongside everything else.

We migrated all of it onto Moodle, hosted on Zühlke’s own infrastructure, and have maintained and developed the platform with them ever since.

The challenge

SharePoint had become the default home for everything-document — but it isn’t a learning platform. Onboarding sequences couldn’t be tracked properly. Security announcements got lost in document folders. There was no clean way to schedule and certify recurring internal courses, let alone deliver external ones consistently.

Zühlke wanted a real LMS, but they wanted it on their own infrastructure — not in someone else’s cloud — and they wanted it to feel like Zühlke, not like generic Moodle.

What we did

• Moved onboarding, security announces, internal courses and certifications off SharePoint onto a Moodle deployment hosted inside Zühlke’s own environment.
• Built a custom Moodle theme in Zühlke’s brand, a custom course format for the way their programmes are structured, and SSO so engineers move into the platform from the corporate identity.
• Built the course scheduling layer for both internal and external cohorts, plus the certification flow that tracks expiry and renewal.
• Produced two interactive courses end-to-end and published them as SCORM on the Zühlke Moodle:
  • Distributed Development — onboarding course for engineers joining distributed delivery teams.
  • Security Onboarding — mandatory security training for every new hire.
• Maintain the platform: upgrades, plugin work, support, content updates.

Outcomes

A platform Zühlke owns, hosted on their own environment, that actually runs onboarding, security training and certifications end-to-end. The relationship has run since 2018 and grew, in 2022, into the opening of a local delivery and coworking hub in Serbia, where part of the work is now staffed.

Differently, if we did it again

Earlier alignment on the certification data model. We adapted as the structure of internal programmes evolved; a sharper data model on day one would have saved one or two later migrations.
